Focusing on wellness, authenticity and the traditions of yoga, enjoy the benefits of our beautiful and fully equipped Starfish Studio by the sea.
The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa offers an abundance of amenities including our beautiful yoga space, the Starfish Studio. The space is large and filled with natural light, a hard floor, fresh ocean breezes in the summer, candles and firelight in cooler weather. We offer mats, towels, eye pillows, hard and soft blocks, bolsters and specialized Pilates equipment for those who appreciate the luxury of arriving and departing a yoga class without the burden of gear.
The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa has always been known for it’s restorative wellness environment. We have offered the deeper and more profound aspects of wellness for over fifteen years with a dedicated in house yoga program. Starting in September 2014 there have been amazing additions to our schedule and teaching staff. We focus on offering a relaxing, balanced program of Restorative and Hatha Yoga classes, striving to bring the best to our guests and clients. There is vitality in addressing varying fitness levels and yoga styles.
We have the privilege of engaging with the great local yoga community in the Comox Valley with this new program. The Valley is a special place for those with healing gifts; it’s also a place where locals embrace extraordinary physical wellness and wholeheartedly engage with others. These qualities are an excellent foundation for outstanding yoga instructors. Even more important is a good education and a regular practice. Many of our teachers have an RYT500 level of training. Some are training graduates who keep their yoga fresh by following a close mentorship of yoga under guidance from their teacher.
The new schedule cultivates strong integrity that honours the traditions of yoga. We are not here to offer yoga for fitness purposes exclusively. In every class you’ll find yoga philosophy and teachings inspired by the ancient yogic texts and sutras, forged in our own lives.
Preregistered classes are a new addition to the program. These are 90 minute classes for those who want to increase and develop their practice. As the classes are preregistered, the instructor will be delivering the class content to the level of the preregistered class. Because this is a new feature at the Kingfisher we’ve priced each series of 6 classes very low to make it attractive to local yoga practitioners. Of course we complement each yoga session with access to the pool, sauna, steam cave, hot pool and showers to make the most of your visit to our beautiful studio.
As teachers we are humbled by the gift of yoga and it is our delight to share that with you on a personal level.

Brenda Blakely (Yoga Lead)
In all of life’s beautiful and awesome mess, we return to the classical yoga teachings and reconnect with what’s important and meaningful to ourselves. That’s what is precious about yoga. We use postures to grow within the form, the breath to soften the hardness of the thoughts and the mindfulness to experience the most amazing element, the self. Even in a group setting Brenda’s teachings are personal, integral and peaceful. Brenda is inspired by the beauty and mindfulness she experiences in her own practice. Her joy is in sharing that beauty with you.
The path of yoga has opened Solene’s awareness of the amazing possibilities in this life, and that has inspired a deep commitment to a yoga lifestyle and philosophy. To her yoga is an ethical, grounded, and inspired approach to life in order to build the foundation for the possibility of spiritual awakening. We discover the ‘gifts of yoga’ as we practice and become closer to our authentic selves, thus allowing clarity, meaning, peace, and joy to grow from within and eventually guide our lives. She incorporates classical yoga philosophy with yoga practices (breathing, postures, and meditation), and applies yoga principles to living in the modern world. She has studied Buddhism and Yoga since 1997 and is a mother of three beautiful children. She is a Certified Yoga Instructor and Registered Nurse.
Heather is a Yoga Alliance certified Yoga Teacher. She has trained with Open Door Yoga and Prana Yoga College in Vancouver. She has been practising and studying yoga for more than 10 years and has had opportunities to deepen her knowledge about the many aspects of yoga through workshops and travel. She teaches Hatha yoga flow with an emphasis on breath awareness. Heather is also a qualified Primary School Teacher and combines her love of teaching yoga and teaching children whenever possible.
Helen is a passionate yoga and dance enthusiast. She has been practising yoga for over thirteen years and is a certified Yoga Teacher. Her classes focus on ‘flow’, weaving breath and movement together to flow as one, and typically include sun salutations and a variety of postures that move and flow with the breath, as well as held postures that create moments of ‘pause.’ Helen introduces a meditation theme for each class and invites you to journey on this theme through the vehicle of your body – to awaken your body’s innate wisdom, freedom and joy.
Deb has been teaching yoga for the past 10 years and practicing for 15 years. Her unique blend of hatha, flow, and Vijnana Tensegrity practices emphasize body awareness and alignment. She brings detail into focus, breaking down the poses to experience a refined essence of ease and balance. Her calming voice will soothe you delightfully through a practice that leaves you strengthened, stretched and relaxed.
Josey is a Yoga Elder with 21 years and over 10,000 hours teaching experience. Way back, as an adolescent, she began her first Yoga classes with the Sivananda Yoga people in London. Her strongest influences have been them, Sandra Sammartino’s multi-dimensional energy yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Dona Holleman, Richard Miller and Yoga Nidra and most recently, the Yoga taught by Namgyal Rinpoche, and the teachings of the Sacred Trust in England. She has a background in midwifery, mind body acupressure and other healing modalities that go back 25 years. Her teaching style works deeply with breath and energy, posture and grounding towards growth, healing and integration. She encourages participants to learn and practice the fundamentals and to find their own inner authority for health and strength of body, mind and spirit.
Traci is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and has been teaching yoga for over fifteen years. With a well trained eye Traci guides her students to access a joyful experience of yoga. She teaches her classes with clarity and precision, inviting students to awaken to the body’s intelligence. Traci’s compassionate and descriptive manner encourages participants to work deeply at a level suitable to their needs.
George started breathing at an early age and has had the good fortune to continue almost daily ever since. He is happy to be in the moment, teaching or practicing the pleasurable art of noticing life in all these bodies. A full time professional teacher since 1995, George is registered with the Yoga Alliance as an ERYT (500), is fully certified iniRest Yoga Nidra, has an honours degree in Religious Studies with a focus on Eastern religions and a graduate diploma in Mental Health and Addictions. In spite of this, he has resisted taking responsibility for any particular school of belief or thought. Laughter, love, and surprise. George has had the immense pleasure of learning from and teaching with the inimitable Donna Farhi and has also been largely influenced by Dr. Richard Miller and his contemporary evolution of Yoga Nidra.
Jennifer has been practicing yoga for the past twenty years and has been a teacher for fourteen. She trained in Anahata Yoga in Banff with Anne Douglas and over the years has been influenced by Kripalu yoga, Sandra Sammartino and Richard Miller.
